Nobody said it was easy, No one ever said that it would be this hard

What is the opposite of black? Is it really white? Isn't there a distinction between extremes and opposites? Don't black and white have more in common than shades of gray?

I am comfortable with black and white. I can identify with both. They are what they are. They have no shades. They exist as absolutes. They stand for themselves. They are complete in their identity. They can look each other in the eye. They can negotiate with each other. They can co-exist. Within the same territory.

It is the gray which makes me uncomfortable. I have difficulty understanding it. The gray merges everything with it. It clouds vision. It tries to remove the boundaries. It tries unwittingly to establish a common ground. It grudges black and white their space. It makes everyone lose.

I like straight lines. Lines running parallel. Lines intersecting. Lines converging. Lines diverging.

What is the opposite of red?

Sans Red is sans intensity.....no fire,no confrontation...yes, no passion....no aggression....no bloodshed......no traffic stops. But again, these are like in Venn Diagrams the complement of Red or Red' & not really opposites. In terms of colors, white or blue come close to being Red'.And blue & red live harmoniously in personalities as the image of the sun in the lake.

Currently, I would match Red to Fuchsia. Why oppose, even color, is what I question myself:))))))
Colors and opposites should complement, only then it is a successful pairing:)))))

P:S:I abhor Grey! Both the color and the situations;))))

dr. sines: interesting. and am surprised and happy u read me.

anon (2): like the mathematical- complement analogy. and yes red and blue do lie opposite each other on the color wheel. can see the reflection....

quicksilver: hey, neat combination.

Hmmmm.....thought provoking :-)
Aren't you getting better day by day!

Black or White is ideal! Sometimes, they merge bringing out shades of grey. And yeah, grey is uncomfortable, confusing, misleading, illusionary....it's like a veil!

I’d say when you look at a picture; avoid staring at that one final color. Identify the packets of blacks and the whites that lie in its composition. They are easy to understand and deal with!

Straight lines are nice, yet there are so many curved lines. Symmetry is nice.....and that's how nature is! Whenever that harmony breaks, there's a catastrophe!

Red has no opposites!
It stands for true passion and if combined with any other color...it will give an interesting result:-)

I would say blue - one so cool, the other so warm, one so indifferent, the other so involved.

Unfortunately, everything has become corrupted, tainted with ash - there are no beautiful absolutes anymore, no certainties -we deal in greys and half lights and half truths and nothing is quite quite.

Be well, anyway.

I go withg Blue as the opposite of Red.. what are your thoughts on wavy lines?:)

perspective inc: neat thought. thats the answer which most resonates with me. red X shades of gray

jenn: i guess its a matter of perspective. at times we believe in the half truths and half lights because we are afraid of admitting of being in the black and in the dark. anyways wishing the white.

sqrlnt: Wavy lines. Interesting question. Ofcourse they are un-straight but they exist in nature. They can run parallel to each other. When they are in symmetary. They carry sound. I like them.

The opposite of red is green, which is also it's compliment. Opposites makes their counterparts standout by increasing their intensity.

i guess its all a state of confusions and conclusions.
what we perceive isnt always what it is.
we see black.. but is it actually black. just coz it takes in all the colors it seems black rite( the scince stories blah blah blah)
that way black should be the best.. coz it accepts each color...
ok.. i guess i'm getting disillusioned...
nice post...
its left me thinking.

golden: interesting take. opposites make each other stand out- like that a lot

preyanca: thanks :) and i like the science bit. again goes to highten my liking for black and white. one accepts all colors, the other repels all. they are opinionated. they have a strong point of view. not muddy. not unsure.

but sometimes don't you think, "thank god for gray"? i'm always in the gray zone. i hink it takes guts to be fully black or fully white.

opposite of red...blue i guess. that's what my shower heads read anyway. :)

You said you are comfortable with black and white? So let me ask you this, is there really ever a 'black' or a 'white'? Aren't they just extreme corners on the shades of grey? Is there ever a true, complete, black, without even a hint of white in the picture? If so, where have you seen it? Same with white.

I mean that both physically and metaphorically.

P.S. :- Going by the black/white being opposites philosophy, technically, the opposite of "red" is "cyan" (black + white = white/red + cyan = white).

Of course, it is a non-sensical answer but well..

pink: Hey the shower makes the penny drop. Till now was thinking ya red and blue seem like opposites but where is the everyday connection.
And no i dont like god for the gray.

unforgiven: its a matter of perspective but as i see it black and white exist as absolutes. let me explain myself with an example.

random boy (not friend)likes girl madly- WHITE

girl does not like boy- WHITE

girl decides she will enjoy the attention, she deserves it and leads boy up garden path- BLACK (and fun)

girl thinks its wrong to lead boy up garden path, but wants to be close friends with him, so tells him she doesnt see future, but at the same time makes herself a bigger integral part of his everyday life- GRAY

I am not saying that I am always in the White. No way. But when I am in the Black- I like to know thats where and who I am.

yupp i hate grey too...its like a venn diagram where the converging circles are converging...but will never converge..

red..hmm..yellow??
and the grey area being orange :P

but the interesting thing about black n white is...the eye will always see the spaces between as 'grey'...optical illusion or not!

its most pissing off when u like sumone and all they say is "its all in the grey"

aargh!!
now i know it was so un-original!

Hey! First of all, nice bundle of views and yet; however imprudent it may sound; but I really don't think that I agree with your thoughts about "gray" color!!

I am not sure, if you have read a poem by "Robert Frost"! It was titled as "Mending Walls" [or maybe something else, I read it when I was a small kid]. It had a clear message, that "Good Fences makes Good Neighbours!".

And I think, you two think along the same lines! :) But is it really true, in it's whole entirety? Don't you feel that sometime, there is a incessant need to let something or someone "overlap". Don't you feel, that to fade away something, you'd need to cover it up; or build upon it? Don't you think; boundries would keep it aloof for ever? Aloofness or clear cut boundries are not answers to most of the problems in life.

Infact, Black and White represents, "extremes" And it's the extreme's that are evil. The true spirit is in "moderation" and thats exactly what "gray" depicts.

Moderation. Human. Overlap and sublimation! :)

As for Red and it's opposites, it depends on what "context"?
There are several!! For instance a "photographer" would say it's "blue". A "traffic" policeman will say it's "green". I don't mean the meaning literally, what I mean, is; the opposite is context-driven!

But as far as my perception goes, it's blue; because Red represents "Fire, passion, zeal, anger, love" and when all those things are missing from life, then you are just "BLUE". :DD

@tom: hi~! have to admit amongst the arguments in favour of gray, yours seems the most persuasive, but am an extremist, not happy with the golden middle path, though the contradictions in me ensure that i walk on both the extreme sides. even liked the bit on contextual opposites. and welcome to my space. :)

velvet: zebra it is. thanks for dropping by. missed you some.

i guess blue is the opposite to red.. microsoft word says so anyway :P

if the complete absorption of light deems black and its complete reflection white... then red on one end of the spectrum must have shades of blue or indigo .. as its opposite.. :) ..

Its been a while since I came here, and left this conversation unfinished. Anyway, to start,

Physically: No color, is absolute. There is no absolute black and there is no absolute white. They can't physically exist. For a substance to be completely back, it needs to reflect back *0* light. Even a black hole, which sucks light due to its gravity, lets some microscopic amounts of photons escape. The same argument, conversely, applies to white.

Metaphorically: Looking at the example you yourself stated,

"random boy (not friend)likes girl madly- WHITE"
How so? Its an emotion, which is always "flooded" with grey. Does he like her? Is he just infatuated? Is he in love with her? How much DOES he really like her?

"girl does not like boy- WHITE"
Again, same argument. Does she really not like him? Is it possible that its just timing, or the clothes he is wearing, or just the fact that she doesn't know him enough? Etc, etc, etc.

"girl decides she will enjoy the attention, she deserves it and leads boy up garden path- BLACK (and fun)"
Why black? Is it really wrong to enjoy attention? If it doesn't hurt anyone (at least if she doesn't believe it will) and her intentions aren't to abuse the guy in any way, is it REALLY that black?

"girl thinks its wrong to lead boy up garden path, but wants to be close friends with him, so tells him she doesnt see future, but at the same time makes herself a bigger integral part of his everyday life- GRAY""

Yep, grey it is.

So you kinda get my point here? There really IS no true black OR white.

All the king's horses and all the king's men, couldn;t put lemon tree's head together again.

Ever since then she has been confused between black, white and grey and of course, red.

I hope you are not colour-blind.
